ASTM B121/B121M-2023
Standard Specification for Leaded Brass Plate, Sheet, Strip, and Rolled Bar
This specification establishes the requirements leaded brass plates, sheets, strips, and rolled bars made from UNS C33500, C34000, C34200, C34000, C35000, C35300, or C35600 copper-zinc-lead alloys. Each product should be manufactured by hot or cold working, and annealed if required, to produce a uniform wrought structure that meets the specified temper properties. This specification also contains information on the standard tempers of rolled and annealed materials as well as the required tensile strength, Rockwell hardness, and grain sizes. The Rockwell hardness test can be used to test for general conformity to the specification requirements for temper, tensile strength and grain size.
MATERIALS:
C33500, also known as brass, is a copper alloy primarily composed of copper (62-65%), zinc (33-36%), and a small percentage of arse. It exhibits good corrosion resistance, high strength, and excellent machining properties. This material finds applications in plumbing fittings, electrical connectors, and decorative applications where its attractive golden color and durability are prized.
C34000, commonly referred to as low-leaded brass, is primarily composed of copper (60-62%), zinc (37.5-39.3%), and a small percentage of lead. This alloy offers good machinability, excellent hot forgeability, and moderate strength. It is commonly used in plumbing fixtures, valve stems, and electrical connectors due to its ease of fabrication and resistance to corrosion.
C34200, a form of leaded brass, is primarily composed of copper (62-64%), zinc (33-35%), and a small percentage of lead. This alloy exhibits good machinability, moderate strength, and excellent corrosion resistance. It is commonly utilized in plumbing and pipe fittings, as well as in electrical connectors and terminals for its ease of fabrication and resistance to environmental degradation.
C35000, commonly referred to as free-cutting brass, is primarily composed of copper (61-63%), lead (1.8-2.5%), and an addition of tellurium (0.4-0.7%). This alloy offers excellent machinability, high strength, and good corrosion resistance. It finds applications in electrical connectors, automotive fittings, and various precision components where its ability to be easily machined into intricate shapes is valued.
C35300, also known as high-leaded brass, is primarily composed of copper (63-66%), zinc (33-35%), and a relatively high amount of lead (2.5-3.7%). This alloy exhibits excellent machinability, good strength, and enhanced corrosion resistance. It is commonly used in plumbing fixtures, valve components, and hardware applications where its ease of machining, low friction properties, and resistance to corrosion are important.
C35600, a form of high-strength brass, is composed of copper (63.5-68%), zinc (30-33%), and small percentages of iron and lead. This alloy offers good corrosion resistance, high tensile and yield strength, and excellent hot and cold forming properties. It is commonly utilized in applications where high strength and ductility are required, such as marine hardware, fittings, and structural components.
