Standard Specification for Copper-Beryllium Alloy Rod and Bar
This specification establishes the requirements for rods and bars in straight lengths of copper-beryllium alloys with Copper Alloy UNS Nos. C17000, C17200, and C17300. The material for manufacture shall be cast and worked to such purity and soundness as to be suitable for processing by hot working, cold working, and annealing to produce a uniform wrought structure and specified temper in the finished product. Products shall be available in the following tempers: solution heat-treated TB00 (A), and cold-drawn hard TD04 (H), which shall be precipitation heat treated after machining or forming. Products that are already precipitation heat treated by the manufacturer shall be available in tempers TF00 (AT) and TH04 (HT). Products shall be sampled and prepared, then tested accordingly to examine their conformance to dimensional (diameter, length, straightness, and edge contour), mechanical (tensile and yield strength, Rockwell hardness, and elongation), and chemical composition requirements.
MATERIALS:
1.C17000: Also known as beryllium copper, C17000 consists of approximately 97% copper and 3% beryllium. It showcases good electrical conductivity, high strength, excellent fatigue resistance, and thermal conductivity. This material is widely used in electrical connectors, springs, and switches due to its superior electrical and mechanical properties, as well as its ability to maintain shape under high stress applications.
2.C17200: Leaded beryllium copper, C17200 contains approximately 98.1% copper, 1.9% beryllium, and a small amount of lead. It possesses high electrical conductivity, excellent machinability, and good strength. The addition of lead improves lubricity and machinability, making C17200 ideal for applications such as electrical and electronic connectors, switches, fasteners, and springs.
3.C17300: Known as copper beryllium zirconium, C17300 is composed of approximately 98% copper, 1.9% beryllium, and 0.1% zirconium. This alloy exhibits exceptional electrical conductivity, high strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent resistance to thermal fatigue. C17300 is commonly used in electrical connectors, relay springs, diaphragms, and other applications requiring high electrical and mechanical performance under harsh and demanding conditions.
4. C17500: Also referred to as beryllium copper cobalt, C17500 is composed of approximately 97.9% copper, 1.8% beryllium, and 0.3% cobalt. It offers high electrical and thermal conductivity, excellent strength, and good corrosion resistance. C17500 is often used in electrical connectors, springs, and switches where a combination of high electrical conductivity, strength, and resistance to fatigue and wear is required.
5. C17465: also known as molybdenum-copper, is a copper material composed of approximately 45% copper and 55% molybdenum. It exhibits excellent thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, and high strength at elevated temperatures. This material is highly resistant to thermal stress and is widely used in industries such as aerospace and electronics. C17465 is commonly employed in heat sinks, microwave devices, power transistors, and high-reliability thermal management systems due to its exceptional thermal properties and ability to dissipate heat efficiently, ensuring reliable performance in demanding applications.
6.C17510: Known as beryllium copper nickel, C17510 consists of approximately 97.1% copper, 1.9% beryllium, and 1% nickel. It exhibits high electrical conductivity, excellent strength, and good resistance to corrosion. C17510 is commonly used in electrical components, connectors, and springs where exceptional electrical and mechanical properties are needed, along with resistance to fatigue, wear, and harsh environments.
7.C17540: This copper material, also known as molybdenum-copper, consists of approximately 45% copper and 55% molybdenum. It possesses excellent thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, and high strength at elevated temperatures. C17540 is widely used in the aerospace industry for heat sinks, microwave devices, power transistors, and high-reliability thermal management systems due to its exceptional thermal properties and resistance to thermal stress.
