Standard Specification for Copper-Zinc-Lead (Red Brass or Hardware Bronze) Rod, Bar, and Shapes
This specification establishes the requirements for copper-zinc-lead (leaded red brass or hardware bronze) rods, bars, and shapes of UNS Alloy Nos. C31400, C31600, and C32000 used for screw machine applications. Tempers available to this specification are O60 (soft anneal), H02 (half-hard), and H04 (hard). Materials for manufacture shall be cast billets, logs, or rods of such purity and soundness as to be suitable for processing by hot working, cold-working, straightening, and annealing to produce a uniform wrought structure in the finished product. Tempers available under this specification are O60 (soft anneal), H02 (half-hard), and H04 (hard). Products shall be tested and conform to dimensional (mass, diameter, length, straightness, and shape), mechanical (tensile and yield strength, and elongation), and chemical composition requirements.

MATERIALS:

C31400, also known as Leaded Commercial Bronze, has a chemical composition of approximately 88% copper, 8% zinc, and 4% lead. It possesses excellent machinability and high corrosion resistance. This material exhibits good electrical conductivity and is widely used in electrical connectors, fasteners, and architectural applications. Its advantageous properties include superior durability, formability, and a pleasing golden color. C31400 is commonly utilized in environments that require resistance to atmospheric and marine conditions.

C31600, or Nickel Silicon Bronze, is a copper alloy with approximately 79% copper, 3% silicon, and 18% nickel. This material offers exceptional resistance to corrosion, particularly in seawater and various chemical environments. C31600 showcases high strength and excellent heat resistance, making it suitable for marine hardware, valves, pumps, and other industrial applications. Furthermore, its excellent thermal conductivity and wear resistance contribute to its wide range of uses.

C32000, known as Lead-Free Brass, is composed of about 70% copper and 30% zinc. This alloy is specifically developed to replace traditional leaded brass materials, hence eliminating potential environmental and health hazards. C32000 exhibits good machinability, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity. It finds its applications in fittings, valves, plumbing fixtures, and rotary union components. The absence of lead content makes C32000 a more sustainable and safer alternative.
