Standard Specification for Free-Cutting Brass Rod, Bar and Shapes for Use in Screw Machines
This specification covers the requirements for UNS C86300, C90500, C91100, C91300, or C93700 bronze alloy castings for turntables, movable bridges, and bridge parts. This specification also includes bronze castings made from the same copper alloys that are suitable for use in bridges and other structures for fixed and expansion bearings in which motion is slow and intermittent. Each product should be manufactured by casting to produce a uniform finished product. Castings made from the UNS C86300 copper alloy should be subjected to Brinell hardness, tension, and compression tests while those made from UNS C91100 and C91300 should be subjected to compression tests. UNS C90500 copper alloy castings should undergo tension tests. All mechanical properties like deformation limit in compression, hardness, and yield strength are determined from separately cast test bars and should conform to the specified requirements.

MATERIALS
1. C36000:
- Chemical Composition: It is a free-cutting brass alloy with a composition of approximately 61% copper (Cu), 35% zinc (Zn), and 2% lead (Pb).
- Physical Properties: C36000 has a reddish-gold color, good thermal conductivity, and excellent corrosion resistance.
- Mechanical Properties: It exhibits high machinability, good strength, and moderate ductility.
- Advantages: The addition of lead improves its machinability and chip breakage, making it suitable for intricate parts and high-speed machining.
- Applications: C36000 is commonly used in plumbing fittings, electrical connectors, valves, and various precision components.

2. C36010:
- Chemical Composition: C36010 is also a free-cutting brass alloy but with slightly different composition, typically around 62% copper (Cu), 36% zinc (Zn), and 2% lead (Pb).
- Physical Properties: It shares similar physical properties to C36000, including its reddish-gold color, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance.
- Mechanical Properties: C36010 offers good machinability, reasonable strength, and moderate ductility.
- Advantages: Similar to C36000, it provides improved machinability due to the presence of lead.
- Applications: C36010 is used in applications requiring excellent machinability, such as electrical connectors, fasteners, and fittings.

3. C86300:
- Chemical Composition: C86300, also known as manganese bronze, has a composition of approximately 60% copper (Cu), 39% zinc (Zn), and 1% manganese (Mn).
- Physical Properties: It has a golden color, good corrosion resistance, and moderate thermal conductivity.
- Mechanical Properties: C86300 exhibits high strength, excellent wear resistance, and good impact resistance.
- Advantages: Its notable properties include high load-carrying capacity, dimensional stability, and resistance to fatigue and deformation.
- Applications: C86300 is commonly used in heavy-duty applications such as gears, bushings, bearings, valve stems, and hydraulic cylinder parts.

4. C90500:
- Chemical Composition: C90500, also referred to as tin bronze, is composed of approximately 88% copper (Cu), 10% tin (Sn), and small amounts of phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn).
- Physical Properties: It has a reddish-brown color, good corrosion resistance, and fair thermal conductivity.
- Mechanical Properties: C90500 offers good strength, excellent machinability, and moderate ductility.
- Advantages: The addition of tin enhances its strength, wear resistance, and anti-friction properties.
- Applications: C90500 is commonly used in bearings, bushings, pump components, valve bodies, and other applications that require high wear resistance and low friction.

 

Copper Profiles
