Standard Specification for Copper and Copper Alloy Forging Rod, Bar, and Shapes
This specification establishes the requirements for copper (UNS Nos. C11000, C14500, and C14700) and copper alloy (UNS Nos. C36500, C37000, C37700, C46400, C48200, C48500, C61900, C62300, C63000, C63200, C64200, C64210, C65500, C67500, C67600, C69300, C70620, C71520, and C77400) forging rods, bars, and shapes. The material for manufacture shall be a cast rod, bar, or billet of such purity and soundness as to be suitable for processing by hot working, cold working, and annealing to produce a uniform wrought structure in the finished product. Products shall be produced in tempers H50 (extruded and drawn), M20 (as hot rolled), and M30 (as hot extruded). Products shall be tested and shall adhere to dimensional (diameter, thickness, width, length, shape, and straightness), mechanical, and chemical composition requirements.
MATERIALS:
C36500, also known as Leaded Muntz Metal, is composed of copper (58-62.5%), zinc (38-41%), and a small percentage of lead (0.5-1.5%). This alloy offers good corrosion resistance, high strength, and excellent hot working properties. It is often used in architectural applications like roofing and cladding due to its attractive golden color and resistance to atmospheric corrosion. Additionally, it finds utility in marine hardware, fasteners, and various industrial components where its combination of strength and corrosion resistance is advantageous.
C37000, commonly referred to as free-cutting brass, is a copper alloy primarily composed of copper (61-63%), zinc (35-37%), and a small percentage of lead (0.5-1.5%). This alloy offers excellent machinability, good corrosion resistance, and moderate strength. It is commonly used in electrical connectors, plumbing fittings, and various hardware components where ease of machining and good overall performance are essential.
C37700, a form of forged yellow brass, is primarily composed of copper (58-62%), zinc (36-40%), and a small percentage of lead (1.5-2.5%). This alloy exhibits good machinability, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance. It finds applications in plumbing fittings, valve components, and decorative hardware due to its ease of fabrication, resistance to corrosion, and attractive appearance.
C46400, also known as naval brass, is composed of copper (59-62%), zinc (39-42%), and a small percentage of tin (0.2-1%). This alloy exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and good weldability. It is commonly used in marine environments for applications such as propeller shafts, fittings, and fasteners due to its resistance to corrosion in saltwater and its excellent combination of strength and ductility. Its ability to withstand harsh conditions makes it ideal for naval and offshore applications.
C67000, also known as low-lead brass, is primarily composed of copper (59-61%), zinc (38-40%), and a small percentage of lead (0.2-0.6%). This alloy offers good corrosion resistance, moderate strength, and excellent machinability. It is commonly used in plumbing fixtures, fittings, and valves where low levels of lead content are desired for compliance with drinking water regulations. Its combination of corrosion resistance, machinability, and formability makes it a preferred choice for various plumbing and water supply applications.
C67500, commonly referred to as manganese bronze, is composed of copper (60-63%), zinc (36-39%), and a small percentage of manganese (0.5-1.0%). This alloy exhibits high strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent wear resistance. It finds applications in marine environments where its superior resistance to seawater corrosion makes it ideal for valve and pump components, underwater fittings, and propellers. Its high strength and wear resistance also make it suitable for heavy-duty machinery and equipment parts.
C67600, also known as yellow brass, is primarily composed of copper (60-63%), zinc (35-39%), and a small percentage of lead (0.3-0.5%). This alloy offers good formability, moderate strength, and excellent corrosion resistance. It finds applications in plumbing fittings, electrical connectors, and decorative hardware due to its combination of ease of fabrication, resistance to corrosion, and attractive appearance. Its versatility and affordability make it a popular choice for various industries requiring a balance of performance and cost-effectiveness.
