Aluminium alloy 2024 is an aluminium alloy, with copper as the primary alloying element. It is used in applications requiring high strength to weight ratio, as well as good fatigue resistance. It is weldable only through friction welding, and has average machinability. Due to poor corrosion resistance, it is often clad with aluminium or Al-1Zn for protection, although this may reduce the fatigue strength. In older systems of terminology, this alloy was named 24ST.
2024 is commonly extruded, and also available in alclad sheet and plate forms. It is not commonly forged.
Annealing:
Aluminium/Aluminum 2024 alloy is annealed from a heat treated condition between 399 and 427°C (750 and 800°F) for about 2 hours and then cooled slowly in the furnace. This alloy can be annealed between cold working operations at 343°C (650°F) for 2 hours after which the alloy is cooled in air.
Cold Working:
Conventional methods are used for cold working Aluminium / Aluminum 2024 alloy. For a sheet that is 1/4" thick, or thinner bend radii of 1/2 to 1 times thickness are suitable. Ductility in the annealed condition is best suited for this alloy. Bend radii of five to six times thickness are suitable for T3 or T4 conditions.
Welding:
Inert gas consumable electrode arc method or resistance welding is used to weld Aluminium / Aluminum 2024 alloy. In general, welding of any kind is not recommended for Aluminium / Aluminum 2024 alloy due to degradation of corrosion resistance that occurs as a result of weld heat. If this alloy is welded then the heat treatment should be repeated.
Forging:
Aluminium/Aluminum 2024 alloy can be forged, but a reasonable corrosion resistance should be retained by a subsequent heat treatment.
Forming:
Conventional methods are used to form Aluminium / Aluminum 2024 alloy. Hot forming is not recommended for this alloy.
Machinability:
Aluminium/Aluminum 2024 alloy has good machining characteristics in the heat treated condition. This alloy also has good machining characteristics in the annealed condition. Oil lubricants should be used in the machining process.
Heat Treatment:
Aluminium/Aluminum 2024 alloy is an age-hardening and is strengthened during the heat treatment process. The T6 condition is obtained when the alloy is heated at 493°C (920°F) and then quenched for 10 h at 190°C (375°F) and finally cooled in air. The T4 condition is obtained when this alloy is heated at 493°C (920°F) followed by cold water quenching and finally aging at room temperature.
Hot Working:
Hot forming is not fully recommended for Aluminium / Aluminum 2024 alloy due to the harmful effect caused by heating upon corrosion resistance.
Hardening:
Aluminium/Aluminum 2024 alloy is hardened by a solution anneal and aging method at room temperature or by cold working.
Aging:
The T6 condition is attained by heating Aluminium / Aluminum 2024 alloy at 493°C (920°F) followed by water quenching, reheating to 190°C (375°F) and finally cooling the alloy in air. The T4 condition is obtained by heating the alloy at 493°C (920°F) followed by cold water quench. Aging finally occurs at room temperature.
Applications:
Aluminium/aluminum 2024 alloy is used in the manufacture of rivets, truck wheels, crew machine products, aircraft structures, veterinary and orthopedic braces and equipment and scientific instruments.
