Standard Specification for Free-Cutting Brass Rod, Bar and Shapes for Use in Screw Machines
This specification covers the requirements for UNS C86300, C90500, C91100, C91300, or C93700 bronze alloy castings for turntables, movable bridges, and bridge parts. This specification also includes bronze castings made from the same copper alloys that are suitable for use in bridges and other structures for fixed and expansion bearings in which motion is slow and intermittent. Each product should be manufactured by casting to produce a uniform finished product. Castings made from the UNS C86300 copper alloy should be subjected to Brinell hardness, tension, and compression tests while those made from UNS C91100 and C91300 should be subjected to compression tests. UNS C90500 copper alloy castings should undergo tension tests. All mechanical properties like deformation limit in compression, hardness, and yield strength are determined from separately cast test bars and should conform to the specified requirements.
MATERIALS
1. C11000 Copper: This commercially pure copper contains a minimum of 99.90% copper, making it an exceptional conductor of heat and electricity. With excellent ductility and corrosion resistance, C11000 is widely used in electrical components, roofing materials, and plumbing fixtures. Its physical properties include a density of 8.89 g/cm³ and a melting point of 1,083°C. The material offers high thermal conductivity and is easily formed, welded, and soldered. Ideal for electrical wires, busbars, and electrical connectors, C11000 copper is a versatile and cost-effective choice.
2. C14500 Copper: Known as Tellurium Copper, C14500 contains around 99.5% copper and 0.4-0.7% tellurium. This alloy combines the excellent electrical conductivity of pure copper with enhanced machinability. Its physical properties include a density of 8.92 g/cm³ and a melting point of 1,038°C. The inclusion of tellurium enhances lubricity and chip breakability during machining operations. With good hot and cold workability, C14500 is commonly used in electrical connectors, switches, and relays. Additionally, it is suitable for welding and brazing applications.
3. C14700 Copper: A high-performance alloy, C14700 possesses around 98.5-99.5% copper and a small percentage of silver (Ag). This copper-silver alloy exhibits excellent electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance. Its physical properties include a density of 8.9 g/cm³ and a melting point of 1,080°C. C14700 offers enhanced strength and mechanical properties compared to pure copper, making it suitable for electrical and electronic components, power transmission, and high-stress applications. Its improved mechanical properties make it an excellent choice for connectors, terminals, and switchgear components.
4. C36500 Copper: This leaded free-machining copper alloy contains around 62-65% copper and 35-38% lead. With excellent machinability and good electrical conductivity, C36500 is primarily used for machining operations. Its physical properties include a density of 8.88 g/cm³ and a melting point of 980°C. This material is often utilized in electrical connectors, terminals, and various components where its free-machining characteristics are advantageous. However, its lead content may restrict its use in certain applications due to environmental concerns.
5. C37000 Copper: Commonly referred to as Free-Cutting Brass, C37000 is an alloy composed of around 61.5-64.5% copper and 0.8-1.9% lead. This machinable brass offers good strength, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity. With a density of 8.52 g/cm³ and a melting point of 920-940°C, C37000 is widely used in plumbing fittings, valves, and electrical connectors. Its free-cutting properties allow for efficient machining, resulting in increased productivity in manufacturing processes.
6. C46400, also known as naval brass, contains 60-63% copper, 37-40% zinc, and a small amount of tin. It offers excellent corrosion resistance in seawater and has good strength, ductility, and electrical conductivity. Widely used in marine applications, it is also suitable for valves, pumps, and heat exchanger tubes.
7. C48200, a bronze alloy, consists of 79-82% copper, 3-5% lead, 9-11% tin, and 5-7% zinc. It provides good machinability, wear resistance, and moderate strength. This material is commonly utilized in bearings, bushings, and gears in heavy-duty applications.
8. C48500, referred to as Leaded Muntz Metal, comprises 56-59% copper, 1-2% lead, and 40-43% zinc. It possesses good corrosion resistance, machinability, and moderate strength. Widely employed in architectural applications, it is also used in valve stems, pump parts, and electrical connectors.
9. C61900 is a nickel-aluminum bronze alloy, primarily composed of 77-81% copper, 9-11% aluminum, 4-5% nickel, and 1-2% iron. It offers high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and good wear properties. This material finds applications in marine environments, such as propeller shafts, pump parts, and shipbuilding components.
Copper Profiles
Copper profiles are commonly used in distribution panels and switchboards delivering key electrical advantages. Profiles are more expensive and difficult to manufacture than flat bars due to the technical requirements such as they provide a more fragile production process, more complicated packaging, and a complex design. Although the profile offers a more detailed process, its unique design enables the manufacturer to meet the demands of individual projects.
Typically, Copper profiles are used in power and electrical engineering, onshore and offshore wind power, mechanical engineering, and supply equipment. Copper profiles are an effective way to reduce the weight of Copper conductors in an existing product. Profiles also allow for flexible designing and can meet the requirements for exact designs in individual jobs. Profiles can be designed to allow fast, hole-free assembly and jointing, which can significantly reduce the time required to assemble bars in a cabinet, improving consistency and quality. Due to the increased surface area of the Copper, the profile can assist in the heat dispersion as the larger shapes and sizes increase the conductivity.
